Cerified Data Center Design Group (CDCDG) was retained by Adobe to commission three (3) sets of four (4) solid oxide fuel cells at their corporate headquarters in San Jose, California. Bloom Energy ES 5000 "Tucson" solid oxide fuel cells were selected for the project. The units use planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology, first developed for NASA's Mars program.


The project includes twelve (12) 100kW fuel cells located on the West Tower parking structure. This phase of the project provides a total of 4x100=400kW of 24/7 power for each tower, totaling 1200kW. New electrical equipment was installed on the output of the fuel cells to aggregate the power, step it up to Adobe's primary voltage service and distribute it to each of three (3) towers.

The commissioning process was designed to verify the individual components and the systems worked as designed.

Specifically, the commissioning verified that the fuels cells performed electrically within their specifications, the energy out vs. energy in. ratio is within published limits, the electrical distribution systems worked as designed and the Bloom Energy and IBS monitoring systems were accurate in their measurements and depiction of proper operations.
